Crimpy And Fun!

Last summer I purchased a grizzled black fleece from Val of Wooly Wool of the West. I sent about half of it off with my black Llama fiber for processing but the other half I sent to Anne at A&B Fiberworks. It came back as the most wonderful pin drafted top. Some of it I posted in my Etsy shop as spinning fiber but I kept a really nice wad of it for myself. Recently I finally spun it up! I haven't had that much fun spinning since the Cotswold fiber last winter!
This fleece is a crossbreed of Clun Forest and Rambouilette. It is dark and intensely crimpy from the Clun but fine and surprisingly soft from the Rambo. The last time I spun anything this crimpy it was Jacob fiber and it's a lot coarser wool than this!

The delightful thing about all the crimp is that it makes the fiber want to cling to itself so you can really go crazy spinning it fine! I don't think I've ever spun anything so fine before and yet the finished yarn was no where near lace weight! Why? Because this crimp can't be drafted away. I drafted very very fine and the finished yarn sprang back into it's obdurate crimpy self! I think I'll rename it "Trampoline"! And the most amazing part? This is not scratchy yarn. Really! I rubbed it across my cheeks and up the inside of my arm and it just slides along! It is a most unique fiber! Crimpy, fine, soft and springy! What will I knit with it? I'm thinking a scarf or a cowl - something that will benefit from it wanting to keep it's shape!

This skein is 6.7 oz (approx 190 gm) 635 yards of 2-ply which means it's only a Sport weight! Springy and oh so soft though!
