February PhatFiber Sampler Box Gems & Minerals

It arrived late last week but I only had time to go through it on the weekend. What I mean is I refuse to rush through it! The condition of the box is becoming amusing! I think Jessie and I have exchanged it at least 5 times now. The labels and tags are accumulating...

I confess that one of my favorite parts - in fact what I always do first - is open up the business card parcel (in this box, the blue bag) and have a boo at any discount offers and especially if there are any stitch markers! Oh how I love getting stitch markers! Isn't it just too cliche? What can I say? I make them because I love them and I love getting them from others!

There were three in this box. The two from WineMakersSister and KnottieGirl Designs are great. The one (bottom right) from Twice Sheared Sheep, although beautiful and showing a significant amount of time expended in workmanship I don't imagine I will ever use, mostly because it has 2 curly cue ends which I am absolutely certain will get caught in lace or anything not knit in a tight gauge. It looks to be a good idea in principle, being round enough on one end to slip onto your needle without going all the way around (it's shaped like a question mark) but it makes me wonder if it comes off just as easily when you don't want it to.... it's the sort of design you look at and say, "Gosh someone spend a lot of time making those! But....".

I got some really nice yarn samples and a pattern for a coffee cozy and a darling, funky two cornered kid's hat.

The fiber samples were amazing! Lots of original colors and blends! The red bag in the bottom was recycled sari silk and dead center was a lustrous coil of dark navy with loads of firestar - delicious!

Although there weren't any really any yarn or fiber samples outstandingly creative in their presentation, these were my favorites! Natchwoolie (far right) for had a fiber sample and business card in the exact same colorway (I dare you to try to do that on purpose the next time you're dyeing! Seriously!) Superb presentation! Beside it is a plush bundle from Fiber Fancy that is kitten-soft and luscious - one of my favorite fiber samples! Beside it is my absolute favorite-out-of-the-whole-box fiber sample Superwash BFL in pink, indigo, rust orange and brown from Spincerely Yours. Just under it, (far left) is a roving sample for knitting not spinning, from Wild Hare with an offer for a free baby hat pattern with any purchase. This is a favorite strictly on presentation - such a neat and tidy bundle with a bright clear label! I am a firm proponent of all roving being sold like this instead of compression braids!
My 2 favorite yarn samples are definitely on the high-end price-wise! The tone on tone blue sample is 50/50 wool silk and is lustrous and slinky - lace weight to boot - from Rebel Yarn. The purple tonal is Merino/Cashmere/nylon in a more Lazy Knitter-friendly weight, totally soft and enticing from Moonlight and Laughter.
I saved the best for last though, if you look in the bottom left of the photo you'll see an interesting little black triangles with silver ribbon thingy. It's a handmade pyramid box. Picture a square with a corresponding triangle along each side. Then picture some person with the patience of Job cutting out this shape from black cardstock then folding the triangles upwards to make the box and punching not one but TWO holes in the tip of each triangle and threading a silver ribbon through it to tie it closed. Now picture them doing this about 50 times or so for their samples.... Taken in this context, this sample is truly worth a special mention! And what was in the box? A really nice stitch marker from Pickin' and Spinnin'. I have to give her a gold star for presentation - she sure made her samples stand out! All I know is I sure can't see myself doing the same with mine any time soon!  Cheers all!
