Gift Yourself Friday Freebies

Maybe it's because I'm getting older but things like Valentine's Day have pretty much lost their fizzle for me. I think maybe that's because I'm better friends with myself now than I used to be and am not so dependent on anyone else for my "feel good". That's not to say I don't really appreciate gifts and things from others, I just don't base my sense of well-being on it. Now before you go thinking I'm some sort of cold fish, I have lots of strong affectionate relationships, I just know myself and my sense of identity doesn't rise and set on them. I'm not embarrassed to say I buy things for myself or make things just to please myself. I think it's healthy to treat yourself once in a while. With that in mind, I have some really great free patterns this week. I'm hoping maybe you'll feel the urge to "valentine" yourself with one of them!

I'm absolutely smitten with this gorgeous Kimono Jacket by Caron Naturally! It's so elegant-casual! The textures and relaxed fit mean it's the kind of garment you'll love wearing for years. I  would make it in something really soft like 100% Merino superwash or a cashmere blend and then wear it every time I cuddle up with a good book! And 2 thumbs up for Caron because they wrote the pattern for both KNIT and CROCHET!

This small snap is the Bodmin Cropped Hoodie from Berroco. I love the hood and I love the tweedy yarn, but the hoodie is about half as long as it should be and with the heavy cables on the front I think it just looks retarded. BUT I have included it here because there's nothing wrong with it that a few more inches of knitting wouldn't fix! Frankly I just don't "get" using chunky yarn and a big warm hood for something that barely covers your ribs! To my rather boring practical mind I think the cropped design should have been made in a light weight cotton or silk blend yarn for spring/summer wear. But the whole tweedy/heathered yarn thing is awesome for the large areas of stockingette! I really think it's a project worth the investment of time and yarn - a real wardrobe staple, with a little adjustment!

And for us gals who are not built like pencils, here is Mead also by Berroco.  It's such a beautiful cabled cardi! A relaxed fit that says laid back but not indifferent! I think it's my favorite out of this week's patterns. To do the cables justice you'd have to use a high twist yarn but that doesn't mean it can't be soft and plush! I'd even put beads down both front edges and along the bottom since it doesn't have a button band or a fancy edge. So many simple ways to really add your own touch - like a little lace edge around the sleeve cuffs... Enjoy! Cheers! :B
