Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle on the Canadian Prairies it is possible to take a 5 mile horseback ride and not meet a single neighbor. Privacy and freedom of movement not enjoyed by much of
the population any more! Against this backdrop I spin, dye and knit various fibers, always eyeing that pet Llama and scheming...

Why I Love Wool
DID YOU KNOW? Unlike synthetic fibers, wool is fire retardant. Up until recently, the blankets firefighters used to rescue people from burning buildings were made of tightly woven wool. This is because wool will only burn if it is held on a flame and immediately stops burning if the flame is removed. Synthetics only need to be exposed to high heat before they combust (they don't even need an open flame) and will continue to burn even after being removed from the heat source. This makes synthetics HIGHLY DANGEROUS for infant bedding and clothing (if they're around smokers) because burning synthetics will actually melt right onto skin and continue to burn even after the flame has gone out.
Wool can be stretched up to 1/3 longer than it's resting length and still snap back into shape!
Wool is a 100% renewable resource that does not require chemicals or consumable energy to produce!
Superwash wool can be machine washed and dried without worry, making it easy care - perfect for infant wear & blankets!
With all the advances in sheep breeds (like Merino and Blue Face Leicester) plus the greater availability of specialty fibers like Alpaca, the days of "scratchy" wool are over!
Books I Recommend
Lovely children's books! All the illustrations are made of felted wool! Unique gifts!!
Chronicles of the Lazy Knitter: Friday Freebies For Freezing Temps
Friday Freebies For Freezing Temps
I've never been much of one for wearing hoodies. The whole idea of having a hood on your jacket to pull up in case of wind or dropping temps is great and I'd never purchase a parka that didn't have one, but what I can't stand was how the weight of the hood pulls the cardi up the front of your neck when it's hanging down the back - which seems to be most of the time. I've considered wearing a baggy cowl so I could pull it over my head when needed but then there's the whole issue of how much around your neck is too much! Enter the independent hood!
I have had this pattern for the Enchanting Hood from Lion Brand in my pattern stash absolutely forever! Knit in chunky yarn and fisherman's rib it's a winning combination of quick knit and and a truly classic look! Not to mention that it has a real stay-on-your-head shape! Not the "2 rectangles sewn together" that you usually find in knit hoods! Break out the 100% Merino or BFL! This one's a real winner!
For a more relaxed look, how about this Shoulder Cabled Hoodie from Caron Naturally? Also knit in a heavier weight of yarn and a large gauge it could easily be completed in a weekend. Their purple sample is nice but I can see this done in art yarn, indie dyed or maybe multiple plies of sock yarn! There's a lot of reverse stockingette between those chunky cables that would really lend itself well to some eye-candy yarn, don't you think? So enjoy a stash-surf and dig out something really fetching for this beauty! Cheers all!

They are both beautiful, but that purple one is calling my name. And I have a long weekend to spend looking through the stash. Thanks. Reply to this
