Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle on the Canadian Prairies it is possible to take a 5 mile horseback ride and not meet a single neighbor. Privacy and freedom of movement not enjoyed by much of
the population any more! Against this backdrop I spin, dye and knit various fibers, always eyeing that pet Llama and scheming...

Why I Love Wool
DID YOU KNOW? Unlike synthetic fibers, wool is fire retardant. Up until recently, the blankets firefighters used to rescue people from burning buildings were made of tightly woven wool. This is because wool will only burn if it is held on a flame and immediately stops burning if the flame is removed. Synthetics only need to be exposed to high heat before they combust (they don't even need an open flame) and will continue to burn even after being removed from the heat source. This makes synthetics HIGHLY DANGEROUS for infant bedding and clothing (if they're around smokers) because burning synthetics will actually melt right onto skin and continue to burn even after the flame has gone out.
Wool can be stretched up to 1/3 longer than it's resting length and still snap back into shape!
Wool is a 100% renewable resource that does not require chemicals or consumable energy to produce!
Superwash wool can be machine washed and dried without worry, making it easy care - perfect for infant wear & blankets!
With all the advances in sheep breeds (like Merino and Blue Face Leicester) plus the greater availability of specialty fibers like Alpaca, the days of "scratchy" wool are over!
Books I Recommend
Lovely children's books! All the illustrations are made of felted wool! Unique gifts!!
Chronicles of the Lazy Knitter: Friday Freebies For Feet
Friday Freebies For Feet
If you're new to knitting in the round and a little uncertain about footwear, here's a great project from Lion Brand, their Sausalito Stirrup Socks . My sister knit them and sent me these pics. She knit the shorter version but the pattern includes a pair that go right to your knees. They're also a great way to use up some of your early (ie: lumpy/chunky) handspun! The sweet little lamb is named Lucky. He's an orphan they're bottle feeding.
OK, cowboy boots aren't exactly my thing and they don't do much to show off this pattern but these Waterlily Leg Warmers from Classic Elite Yarns are actually really nice! They're a great way to learn about knitting in the round and a great introduction to cables too! *Hint: They also knit up pretty quickly if you need one more knitted gift and you know you don't have time for a pair of socks! I figure a couple good B&W holiday movies and you'll be well on your way! I also recommend handspun and/or superwash yarn, especially if they're a gift! Personally, I prefer leg warmers to stirrup socks because I just can't stand having anything under my bare feet!
And for "Totally Funky" you just can't beat these Elf Slippers from Caron Naturally. I mean nothing says Holiday Spirit like curled up toes and wacky color patterns! They actually worked up TWO patterns: Elf Slippers Knit and Elf Slippers Crochet (pictured). HUGE kudos to Caron for that! May I suggest you pair them up with the Elf Hat pattern a few Friday Freebies back? So Ho ho ho enjoy! Cheers!
