Work Socks Update

As of this posting I am officially half done the work socks! It's true they've got no fancy textured stitches or spectacular design elements but they will be worn every work day by someone I love for at least the next year to year and a half. They fit well and are durable. What's more, if one accidentally slips in the laundry with his jeans it won't be ruined. To me, appreciated and appropriately functional is what it's all about, with a project like this!

I just had to include a close-up of one of my "perfectly" turned no-wrap heels. I suppose after you've made as many as I have they'd better come out right! LOL! Having said that I admit to occasionally picking up my knitting in the middle of a heel and going the wrong way and having to fudge my way through having one turn more than I should! Knitting and fatigue are never a good combination! *sigh*
This week in particular I've had more than my usual joint grumbles with such digitally demanding knitting. This weekend I got - for free - a solid oak teacher's desk. You know, the kind you used to cower in front of when sent to the principal's office? Well this one's about 60 years old and heavy like there's no tomorrow. Why was it free? The top was badly in need of sanding and refinishing plus some genius had cut the bottoms of the front legs off to get it up some stairs. Really!
Re-finishing the top was a snap! We unloaded it in the front yard and I did all the machine sanding, staining and varethaning outside in the warm sunshine. It was done in a day. Fixing the legs involved drilling, dowelling and glueing the pieces. However, since I am so unaccustomed to doing that much intense manual work at one time my hands were so stiff Monday I couldn't knit at all! Talk about feeling like an old lady!! Ha!

All things considered, a huge score! I just wish I had re-finished the fronts of the drawers now. I didn't realize they would look so shoddy with the top refinished. D'oh! I planned all along to use it as a work space for making Etsy stuff. The top is even the right thickness for the clamps on my carder so I guess you're looking at my "Etsy Factory"! If you look closely you can see the cuts on the front legs but it's sound now and that's all that matters to me! Appreciated and appropriately functional... isn't that what I said earlier, eh? Cheers all!
