Friday Freebies: Continuing With Cowls

Blame it on Eleanor in the new Knitty, but I'm catching cowl fever again! So I'm posting some from my free pattern stash to inspire you to cast on! This autumnal fairisle cowl from Lion brand is called Hanna . Don't be intimidated! this pattern follows the traditional only-two-colors-per-row. I can SO picture this done in nothing but dark and light shades of blue, or a wedgewood-style in delf blue and snow white! Here's a tip for colorwork in the round: if you're worried your floats will be too tight, simply turn your work inside out so your floats get the maximum length. Easy!

This Thermal Knit cowl also from Lion Brand is not only a generous size but the stitch pattern is reversible so you can wear it twisted or flipped up - how cool is that? I love textured knits like this. Such a tactile pleasure! I can honestly say this pattern would be just as great in a plain Jane superwash wool as it would in something much more costly like handpainted or luxury fiber.

If you want something as warm as a scarf but less work than the two patterns above, how about this Eco Cozy Cowl from Caron Naturally? Knit in a big gauge in a simple rib, this cowl has multiple wear positions! As shown, under your jacket, this will be super toasty.! Give it a half twist and loop it over your head to block the fall breeze! Just make sure you use a super plush yarn because you want something that hugs you like this to be cuddle-friendly! Enjoy! Cheers!
