Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle on the Canadian Prairies it is possible to take a 5 mile horseback ride and not meet a single neighbor. Privacy and freedom of movement not enjoyed by much of
the population any more! Against this backdrop I spin, dye and knit various fibers, always eyeing that pet Llama and scheming...

Why I Love Wool
DID YOU KNOW? Unlike synthetic fibers, wool is fire retardant. Up until recently, the blankets firefighters used to rescue people from burning buildings were made of tightly woven wool. This is because wool will only burn if it is held on a flame and immediately stops burning if the flame is removed. Synthetics only need to be exposed to high heat before they combust (they don't even need an open flame) and will continue to burn even after being removed from the heat source. This makes synthetics HIGHLY DANGEROUS for infant bedding and clothing (if they're around smokers) because burning synthetics will actually melt right onto skin and continue to burn even after the flame has gone out.
Wool can be stretched up to 1/3 longer than it's resting length and still snap back into shape!
Wool is a 100% renewable resource that does not require chemicals or consumable energy to produce!
Superwash wool can be machine washed and dried without worry, making it easy care - perfect for infant wear & blankets!
With all the advances in sheep breeds (like Merino and Blue Face Leicester) plus the greater availability of specialty fibers like Alpaca, the days of "scratchy" wool are over!
Books I Recommend
Lovely children's books! All the illustrations are made of felted wool! Unique gifts!!
Well I accomplished pretty much nothing this long weekend - kind of a drag. I'm not feeling that great and some of my kids are down with a cold too. Worse, I'm working on something I hate - setting up a new bookkeeping system on the computer - and doing the inventory is taking, like, forever! To top it all off it's cold and raining so I can't even sit outside and finish picking the veg out of the white Jacob, a job I really really want to finish before it's freezing outside. (A job I could justify perfectly, if the weather was nice - OH how I'd love to walk out on the computer and do that! Ha!) But, alas, I can't! I have to get this system up and running before the end of October and it's SO totally cut into my knitting time that I haven't picked up my needles for nearly 6 weeks now. I'm still spinning in "me" time in the evenings and I've actually finished quite a few bobbins of different singles. I'm hoping to finish the batch I'm working on ASAP so I can move on to plying them all up and then I'll show you pics. Of course, if that wasn't enough to do, the real reason I'm trying to finish the singles is because I have superwash yarn coming from Little Knits to make 5 more pairs of work socks for DS#2 because he has started wearing through the ones I made him 18 months ago - pretty darn good mileage, I'd say! Still, it usually takes me 2 months to knit 5 pairs because he likes them extra thick, so everything else goes out the window until that job is done - spinning, plying, sweaters - everything! I just don't have enough time in the day to commit to work, family and all my hobbies - oh, did I use the word "commit"? I'd better be careful about how I use that one! hahahahaha! So I'm really putting the pedal down to get these singles finished! About the only "real" job I got finished is bottling and corking my kit wine. It's Cabernet Sauvignon - my favorite - and it turned out pretty well I think! The party's here folks - c'mon over if you're not afraid of catching a cold bug!
