Another Email From My Sister

It always warms my heart to get an email from my little sister with pics of her latest projects! She is charging ahead into more afghans using some of the yarns I sent her. It was one of those rather odd undertakings, you know, when you stuff a big box so full you have to sit on it to get it taped shut and once you've sent it off you hardly notice there's any yarn gone from your stash at all... But pretty much everything I sent was mill ends, easy care acrylic - the perfect things for a beginning knitter with a young family of eager washing machine users...

This first one is mostly boucle with a textured novelty yarn in the center panel. I SO love the muted colors! She sure has an eye for color combos! Boucle really finds it's full potential in garter stitch, in my opinion. It makes the absolute maximum of plush snuggly depth that you can get out of boucle so long as your gauge isn't too tight and she seems to have this one going at pretty much the perfect gauge for this yarn weight. It's for her oldest daughter, who has discovered the power of nagging, "You're sitting down Mom, shouldn't you be knitting?" Ha! Ha!

The second afghan makes me particularly proud! I sent her a big bag of chunky weight yarn in assorted colors and the pattern for a Log Cabin Squares afghan. With the help of her knitting books she figured out how to cast off and pick up stitches ON HER OWN and has this to show for her efforts:

Not too shabby, eh? I would like to think I've been a good influence on her (despite enabling her knitting addiction), by sending her circular knitting needles in a broad range of sizes. She quickly discovered how much easier they are on your hands than straights and if you're going to tackle afghans, nothing holds as many stitches! She likes knitting but is not ready to learn piecing (one step at a time, she says) so she is going to keep going around the square until it's wide enough for her 2nd daughter's bed.
All I know is I couldn't be prouder! Well done Sis! I look forward to the next set of photos! Cheers all!
