Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle on the Canadian Prairies it is possible to take a 5 mile horseback ride and not meet a single neighbor. Privacy and freedom of movement not enjoyed by much of
the population any more! Against this backdrop I spin, dye and knit various fibers, always eyeing that pet Llama and scheming...

Why I Love Wool
DID YOU KNOW? Unlike synthetic fibers, wool is fire retardant. Up until recently, the blankets firefighters used to rescue people from burning buildings were made of tightly woven wool. This is because wool will only burn if it is held on a flame and immediately stops burning if the flame is removed. Synthetics only need to be exposed to high heat before they combust (they don't even need an open flame) and will continue to burn even after being removed from the heat source. This makes synthetics HIGHLY DANGEROUS for infant bedding and clothing (if they're around smokers) because burning synthetics will actually melt right onto skin and continue to burn even after the flame has gone out.
Wool can be stretched up to 1/3 longer than it's resting length and still snap back into shape!
Wool is a 100% renewable resource that does not require chemicals or consumable energy to produce!
Superwash wool can be machine washed and dried without worry, making it easy care - perfect for infant wear & blankets!
With all the advances in sheep breeds (like Merino and Blue Face Leicester) plus the greater availability of specialty fibers like Alpaca, the days of "scratchy" wool are over!
Books I Recommend
Lovely children's books! All the illustrations are made of felted wool! Unique gifts!!
Chronicles of the Lazy Knitter: Feminine Friday Freebies
Feminine Friday Freebies
It's been another loooong week and the llama, although coralled, still eludes capture. So I'm still sulking and pouting. It has put me in a I-need-some-pampering mode. The reality is, that's unlikely to happen any time soon (or later) so the next best thing is to browse some new patterns and try to get inspired to get working on my too-many-UFO's. With that in mind, I am posting two really lovely, really feminine knit tops with lots of creative potential.
This sweet, breezy knit is called the Sampler Stitch Pullover from Tahki Stacey Charles. I can envision it being spectacular in almost any color - except the one they've chosen. Pale lime green just doesn't do it for me in this design. Their sample is knit in cotton which I think is wonderful, but how about a cotton/bamboo/silk blend? How about going decadent for fall and knit it in cashmere and wear it with real pearls and a classic black skirt? It looks like it would flatter almost any figure because the lines are so simple and the stitch pattern so classic. In short, I really love this design!
Okay, I didn't realize there was text on this image and NO, it isn't a working link - sorry! This is the Aspira One Button Tunic Top from Caron Naturally. There isn't anything I don't like about this versatile top. First, if you didn't think the Sampler stitch top could work on almost any figure, this one sure can! There is nothing boring about it, starting with the pattern, which begins, "Cast on 3 stitches". That's right! It's knit on the diagonal so it will have gorgeous drape in almost any yarn! So break out the fine cotton or silk blend you've been saving! The textured stitch adds visual interest and the shaping is so flattering! It's a great way to hide those troublesome middle parts and guarantees never to creep up your back at the waistline like tops that only come to the top of the hip and fit snug. The lack of shoulder seams means a casual fit that won't crawl up your underarms either. This top just oozes summer comfort to wear and guarantees a not-boring-to-knit project. Win-Win! So here's to summer knits for lazy days! Cheers! Enjoy!
