Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle on the Canadian Prairies it is possible to take a 5 mile horseback ride and not meet a single neighbor. Privacy and freedom of movement not enjoyed by much of
the population any more! Against this backdrop I spin, dye and knit various fibers, always eyeing that pet Llama and scheming...

Why I Love Wool
DID YOU KNOW? Unlike synthetic fibers, wool is fire retardant. Up until recently, the blankets firefighters used to rescue people from burning buildings were made of tightly woven wool. This is because wool will only burn if it is held on a flame and immediately stops burning if the flame is removed. Synthetics only need to be exposed to high heat before they combust (they don't even need an open flame) and will continue to burn even after being removed from the heat source. This makes synthetics HIGHLY DANGEROUS for infant bedding and clothing (if they're around smokers) because burning synthetics will actually melt right onto skin and continue to burn even after the flame has gone out.
Wool can be stretched up to 1/3 longer than it's resting length and still snap back into shape!
Wool is a 100% renewable resource that does not require chemicals or consumable energy to produce!
Superwash wool can be machine washed and dried without worry, making it easy care - perfect for infant wear & blankets!
With all the advances in sheep breeds (like Merino and Blue Face Leicester) plus the greater availability of specialty fibers like Alpaca, the days of "scratchy" wool are over!
Books I Recommend
Lovely children's books! All the illustrations are made of felted wool! Unique gifts!!
It must be because it's summer that there seem to be garage sales every weekend. And even though I often don't feel like stopping there's usually someone with me when I'm out and about that does! LOL! Well I must admit I never expected to find something for DS#1 the way he found that wall hanging for me but he's a big fan of South Park and I had the good fortune to actually recognize this stuffed doll of Cartman and picked it up for a pittance! Of course he usually has a hat! Fortunately, I can fix that because his hat's a toque! HA!
Very helpful DS#3 pulled up Cartman's image from the internet so I'd get the colors right! DD#1 dug through the stash and came up with appropriate yellow and turquoise. By the time the rim was this long I was promptly directed to shorten it as it was much too long! Fortunately I had used a crochet cast on so I simply picked up the cast on edge, folding it in half (like I'm going to rip back on a toque for a doll!! LOL!!)
So I sat and knit Cartman a toque. I mean, it's not like I had anything else to do.... All my favorite bloggers seem to be going to the Sock Summit in Oregon so there's nothing interesting to read online today... humph! I think Monika from Smokin' Hot Needles is the only one who didn't make plans to go but who can blame her - she just got the most adorable puppy! A fluffy white bundle of love named Happy! All my online spinning bloggers are working on small lots of delicious looking fiber - and I'm still plugging away on my large lots and feeling a bit monotonous. I suppose I shouldn't whine because I'm not bored with it and it's something I really want to get done but I can't help feeling more than just a smidge jealous! I think it's a mild case of the mid-summer doldrums! I think part of the problem is that I take my blog rather seriously. I want it to be interesting, entertaining, even a bit fun - I LIKE having interesting things to post, even if they're not perfect or fabulous. I want it to be "as good" as the others I enjoy reading. I seem to go through this angst at least once a year, watching the terrific things other knitters and spinners finish quickly and post about because they don't have the same time constraints I do. I often wonder if I'd still be blogging if it weren't for the statistics generator in the blog interface. It lets me see how many unique visits my blog receives every day which at times, is very reassuring. If I relied on the number of comments as an indication of interest I think I'd have quit long ago. I must say that I don't entirely take the statistics at face value - I know a certain percentage of them are spambots looking for email addresses etc but I think there's still sufficient readership to encourage me to continue. Which brings me back to the anxiety of providing something worth coming back to read! My Linen hat is still waiting to be blocked. Part of the problem is that it is roundspherical and I'm having trouble figuring out how to block it. Ithought of using a large balloon but that completely would rule outusing pins to open the lace and hold it in place.... Same with using a ball.... Iseriously considered using Cartman but he just wasn't round enough...I'm pretty much open to suggestions for this....
For sure I'm at least a week away from plying anything. My Luxury Sweater is progressing slowly but not enough to post about. I've been working on that sweater yoke cape-thing too - also nothing noteworthy to show for my time. The Botanica Medallion border is light years away from being done. So it looks like the only thing I'm going to finish and post about in the immediate future is Cartman's toque! LOL! Not exactly gripping entertainment! Nevertheless, I think one good turn deserves another and I really, really love the wall hanging DS#1 picked up for me. Taking a bit of time to do something nice for him is the least I can do, don't you think?

That is adorable. Please don't let the summer doldrums get you down. I don't comment often because I have a two year old in the house that only lets me have mere seconds on the computer. I make sure I have time to read, but then I must run after her. But I love reading you and it reminds me what I love about fibery pursuits. You do beautiful work! Reply to this
