Whatever Happened to That Linen Hat?

Slowly but surely it's coming along! I decided not to do the decreases near the bottom edge of the hat which would draw it in and make it into a beret. I've never been very fond of berets, being a touque-ish Canadian-type of girl who likes warm ears. Since this hat is for summer wear I thought maybe I'd make it into more of a mop-cap and run a very fine elastic thread around the rim above the lace. The rim is fairly generous sized and I'm hoping the hat will soften with washing and wear and turn into something floppy and comfortable but nicer than a bucket hat.
I selected "Petite Open Points" lace from Nicky Epstein's 'no-knitter-should-be-without-it' book Knitting on the Edge. It's actually a fairly simple 7 row repeat and at the end of every 2nd row I knit the last stitch together with a live stitch from the edge of the hat. It's making a really nice looking join (which I tried and failed miserably to photograph because the yarn is so dark) and when I'm done I'll only have to seam the ends of the lace - BONUS! However, it seems there is a near-infinite number of live stitches along the edge of this darn hat giving the impression of near-infinite lace knitting to finish it!! Hrmph! So far it has kept me occupied through the wait for several dentist appointments, several driver's tests and goodness knows what else and I'm still not finished!! And the silver lining to this cloud?? As hard to believe as it may be - so far - there are NO mistakes in the lace edge. Really! In fact it's gone so well I've almost worked up enough courage to pick up that precious Swallowtail Shawl when the hat is done! LOL! So sometime (hopefully before Christmas) I'll post the blocking pictures.... hahahahahaha!
