Luxury Sweater Progress

When you really love something it's hard to put it down! I've had my luxury sweater basket next to my computer this week, picking it up and doing the odd row when browsing or waiting for things to load. It's surprising how much progress can be made this way! I'm well started on my second skein already!

The photo is a bit dark but I wanted the cables to show up as this yarn is a fairly light heathered pink/grey. I modified the cables from their original in the stitch pattern book as they were only a 2-stitch wide cable and I made them 3. With yarn this fine I wanted them to stand out more. The center and 2 side panels are a very simple knit & purl. Rounds 1 & 2 are K2 P2, then rounds 3 & 4 are P2 K2 (remember this is circular knitting). I used Moss stitch on my Finn sweater and thought it made the fabric much too thin as this is only a 2-ply yarn being knit on 3 1/2mm (US 4) circular needle. It gives a pleasant texture without taking anything away from the cables and certainly gives that celtic Aran look.
I consider this project to be a true lazy knit because only about a third of the stitches require any real "work", and that's only every 2nd round - the rest is stockingette. The thing I like best about wandering cables is that I don't need to follow a pattern, I just look at where the pattern on the sweater is and know which direction to move the stitches. It's pretty foolproof. And this yarn is sooooo soft!
I still think it's going to take a long time to finish but it's a pleasure to work on!

cables-what you call foolproof is hard work for me. I'm always getting them wrong, straight up or wandering, no matter. You are knitting a sweater on 3.5mm?!!! Wow, I would never finish it in my life time. IT's a lovely color though. Have fun!

Monika, I'm shocked!! YOU? Who knit breathtaking fairy lace shawls like you were born doing it?? I never would have believed it! But before you get any more impressed, I never said I didn't make mistakes in the cables! LOL!! If I do, I just make sure I never photograph it!
And yes, the needle size is daunting... But... I saw on Historic Stitcher's blog where she knit a spectacular men's Gansey on old fashioned knitting pins - at least the size of your favorite sock needles - really! (like, 1.5 mmm or something) So my 3.5mm isn't so amazing! LOL!

That is going to be just lovely! And if you've done one skein already, the whole thing will be ready to wear when the snow melts and you want to head out with no parka. Gorgeous!
