Think Outside the Sox Contest

I ran across this contest the other day - actually I ran across a post with a link to the Winners of this contest. Top prize was $6000 US! I think the best part about it was that the judging was done by other knitters, not just a small panel of judges with their own preferences and biases. It means the grand prize winner won because the voters appreciated how much work went into the socks! Here's another link if you want to see all the Entries. I highly recommend the slideshow but be patient - it takes a couple minutes to load, mostly because there are over 200 pictures. To me, it would be ideal to sit at the monitor with another sock knitter and a nice pot of Vanilla Rooibos and gabble for an hour over them!
I must say I agree with the Knitter's Choice Award. The ecru hose are lovely! My favorite pairs are #21 and #274. #129 is a really OMG pair - 100% entrelac - even the heels & toes - and extremely well done! I think a tip of the hat should also go to those knitters who submitted deliberately fraternal twin socks. That really IS thinking outside the sox! I just thought I'd pass along these links because it isn't every day you get to see SO many handknit socks all together in one place! Talk about inspiration! Doesn't it make you want to got to your stash and dig out a little something? Enjoy!!

I liked the fact that the socks were from all over, even Russia! Loved the purple with vine going around and the little girl's with leaves that will shake rattle and roll as you walk. What fun they would be to wear! I'm stymied over the grand prize winner's method. Do you think she painted the spots on a solid background?

I really liked the shake & rattle pair too! I was sooo hard to pick just 1 favorite! Believe it or not I really think the Grand prize winner was colorwork done fairisle-style. Can't you just imagine going cross-eyed carrying the 3 colors? Even if it was done by the slip stitch color method it meant knit 3 rounds per row! Sheesh! Definitely not a pair I'd ever knit!! LOL!!
