Branching into New Territory

With 2 new babies due this year in our rather large extended family, DD#1 thought she'd try her hand at a baby blanket or two. She selected superwash wool for easy care, warmth and safety. The big departure was method. Her favorite is the traditional oval spiral. For this blanket she decided to try join-as-you-go strips of small squares, all done in single crochet so it can't snag baby buttons or fingers. Fine yarn + single crochet = slow going! By the time she was finished she was really glad it was a small project!! LOL!!

As with all her projects she has an appetite for the bright and colorful but offset them with ivory. I think it really works! What's more, it's suitable for either a boy or a girl - clever! She couldn't resist adding a ruffle and I think it's the perfect finish. I'm debating whether or not to wash it before gifting. Any thoughts on this? What do you do?

That is lovely! It appears that DD#1 has your creative talent! Lucky girl!

Not so crazy about the "new look" that was thrust upon you but then I don't do change well at the best of times. I'm sure I will get used to it.

That's a very pretty and practical baby gift! I wash gifts before I give them. They look nicer after they're washed.

That's a lovely baby blanket! I wash ALL my knit/crochet items, before I give them away. I use lavender no rinse wool wash, so it smells good too. :o)

Well done and it must be nice to have yarn people in the family who appreciate the hours and love put into such an undertaking. She might count the # of stitches in one sq. multiply by the whole project and try to figure the # on the trim. I once did include the # of stitches in a baby blanket present in the card.

    A. Beautiful! I love the ruffle. Her crochet just gets better and better, and these colours are so perfect together.
    B. I ALWAYS wash before gifting (and stick in a note...washed and ready to go) This likely dates back to my childhood and watching a few less than clean people fondling the yarn. Gave me the creeps, and I always imagine they touched the stuff I am using...yep, wash it!
