Autumn Leaves

I know I tend to portray plying as drudge work, but it really isn't. To me, it's where the magic comes into spinning. Colors and weights combine in a seeming alchemy and voila! Your original concept is staring you in the face - a reality!

It would be really nice if that were the true reality, but my limited skill as a spinner prevents that, just yet! LOL! I had really intended for the colored singles to be heavier than they turned out. The brown was as consistently fine as I hoped but at times, plying, the weight of the two was indistinguishable. That was my one disappointment. I had hoped for a finished chunky weight but alas! Not to be! This is a DK weight, 200 gm, 10-13 wraps per inch, and about 340+ yards.
I was reading Smoking Hot Needles the other day and she spun some deliciously gorgeous fine yarn 1000+ yards from not much top and I was in awe! I feel like I'm still in some inconsistent spinning netherworld where regardless of the weight I try to spin I can't seem to maintain it - my singles diameter still wanders all over the place. I can't help but wonder if it's because my MIND wanders all over the place when I'm spinning!! LOL!!
Perhaps it's also the natural progression spinners go through, starting out hopelessly chunky and spinning finer and finer over time until you can't spin chunky any more, then struggling to attain diversity instead of the current 'steady' fine singles. That's my take on it, anyways. I would say I'm at the "Can't spin chunky anymore" stage but not at the "steady fine singles" stage yet. Sigh! And what if I never get there??? Hmmmm.... Maybe I should worry more about spinning yarn in a weight I LIKE to knit with.... "fine" is OK but Aran and heavier are more my speed..... which uses a lot more top per yard... good thing I've got pounds and pounds...... ROFL!!!

Oh, the yarn is gorgeous! Of course I love orange, and these are fall colors which I love too. I can't spin thick, and one reason is, that I had only 4oz of fiber most of the time and wanted to make the most of it. I always wanted to be able to make good sock yarn, because that's what I knit most. I think DK is the thickest I can spin right now.
