Something to Read Before Spring

As with many of my purchases I wasn't exactly 'looking' for books on dyeing .... but one of the places I get roving from had a rather costly volume on Madder and Indigo etc and it piqued my curiosity. Admittedly, this is what they call "impulse buying" but at least it's toned down impulse buying. (Isn't this where I'm supposed to add that admitting you have a problem is biggest part of doing something about it? ... or not...). I digress!
Anyways, since I didn't feel I could justify that kind of outlay for something I'm only "curious" about, I did some searching on eBay and found two little volumes that I felt much better about buying. The Blue volume on Natural Dyes was a mere 5.99 and the Dyer's Garden was 12.00. Including shipping these two still cost less than just the purchase price of the original book I was looking at!

Even though the blue one is much older than the brand new Dyer's Garden, the methods and theory are surprisingly similar. I haven't been through them cover to cover yet but am determined to do so. I'm hoping to discover a few plants that will actually grow here that I might want to plant in the Spring. Both have very different writing styles and I'm hoping, not too much overlap in plants. I've been concerned about the effects commercial dyes have on the yarns I dye not to mention their eventual re-entry into the environment. Even if I can't find plants that will grow here I still consider these books a good investment because I'm sure the plantstuffs are available online from someone .... just like everything else!! LOL!!
