Making a New Best Friend

At long last I had time on the weekend to get acquainted with my Baynes double treadle. It took a bit to get used to using both legs but by the second bobbin I had it sorted. I have one word to describe using my new wheel - "Amazing!". Spinning more consistent, fine yarn is so effortless! But my! how fast it spins!! The wheel is so obedient to the treadle for start and stop too! Such a contrast to my Cowichan Spinner! Make no mistake, I am not about to mothball the Cowichan, all I'm saying is that the contrast between the two wheels is astounding! I can see myself using the Baynes a lot for plied yarn, the Cowichan for singles.

This is just under 8 oz of superwash merino called Sandy Beach. I could have stuffed the last bit onto the bobbin but I thought maybe I should put it on a separate bobbin in case the 2 bobbins aren't as evenly filled yardage-wise. It might be handy to have that extra bit when I get to the end of one of them!
I realize there is no way I will ever ply all that yarn onto one bobbin ... enter the Jumbo Flyer and bobbins which conveniently arrived Tuesday from New Zealand!

I put one of the regular sized bobbins on the chair so you can see how much bigger the jumbo ones are. I read that they are often used for plying singles, not just for spinning thicker yarn. Of course I have to finish them first (groan!). Isn't that the way, how one job naturally fosters another.... LOL!! At least I still have stain left over from  doing the wheel so out come the rags and latex gloves .....

I have only used my jumbo bobbins for plying so far. I don't like thick yarn. It's just great to get it all in one skein.
