Projects in Progress

Just a small post today with pics of my current projects! My DDs enjoy walking in the evenings and as the temperatures are dropping I have responded to their appeal for appropriate garments! Their choice has been sweaters from some of the lovely Marl La I have in my baskets of stash! So, armed with 12.5mm needles (it's a quick knit because it's so bulky) and EZ's yoke sweater formula I started. The colors look much better knit up than I thought they would. The sleeves may be a bit of a challenge as I don't have 12.5mm DPNs or 16" circs ... magic loop maybe???

I'm 2/3 finished another bag knit of my handspun to be felted. It's kind of cool how both my DDs have caught "Bag Fever"!! Each is working on one and planning the next! I'll post pics as they finish! We planned on making about 10 or so for packing home groceries. Just our little contribution to less plastic garbage!

And last but not least, my latest spinning. I'm working very hard to make singles that knit about a DK weight. I received a handknit sweater from a friend several years ago (which is much too small for her or I!!). However I'm madly in love with the yoke pattern and determined to make one for myself that will fit. I have some really nice merino roving in some lush colors that I've been working on. I want the yoke pattern to be in natural white on maybe a purple background. The main body will be a 3 color blend I haven't spun yet that matches the ones I've already spun. Boy it sure takes a lot of concentration to keep a consistent diameter!

Sort of a grapevine color theme, eh? Yes, there's a bit of over twist too (curly bits) but I haven't set this twist yet so it will relax a bit. Over all I'm pretty excited! I have always liked minimum twist yarns like lopi but didn't like how thick most commercial yarns are. What's more these are 100% merino so the texture and hand are really superb!
I'm making a good friend of my Cowichan Spinner. I expected it would have limitations which I would discover over time, from using it. So far I have found I can't spin short staple fiber with it. There's just too long a distance from the orifice to the spindle and the short fibers just shred before they ever wind on. Having said that, I think it IS possible to spin short staple fiber on it, you just have to make extra chunky yarn, which I have no desire to do, at least for the time being. This merino spins singles wonderfully at a DK weight because the fibers are nice and long so they stay intact until they wind on. It takes me a little while to get my rhythm going when I get started but before long we're in sync - and then someone interrups me and I have to start again!! LOL!! Such is life!
