Farm Memories

I mentioned in a previous entry that we used to have sheep. I went back through the photo albums to see if I had any pictures nice enough to post. Well, I did find one nice one of the sheep - but oh my! The other pictures I found bring back bittersweet memories of days that seemed longer, much less hectic and more magic, sharing all the following creatures with the children!

Here's a shot of our Llama "Cuzco" with some of the sheep he adopted and guarded. This is late fall with the leaves already fallen and the lambs weaned and sold, just the ewes here. Our main breed was Cheviot, as you can see, white faces and legs. Very gentle, calm and maternal with consistent lambing of twins. At it's peak our flock was alittle over 60 ewes. Sigh! I miss my lambies!!

Of course we couldn't have just sheep!! LOL! This is DD#1's pet goat with her last brood - triplets! They were born in March inside the barn so yes, everyone was in snowsuits! The toddler in pink is DD#2 who just finished crocheting a cardigan so that should give you an idea how long ago this was! Seems like only yesterday!  Here's a closer shot of the kids. They are a breed called Nubian thus the floppy ears and humped nose.

Here's DD#1 in spring with two of the horses, letting them graze on the lawn. This was the grey mare's last foal. The Pinto is a gelding, DD#1's pride & joy. She still rides him. They are the same age (17 now) and the same temperment, feisty and energetic! We still have all our saddle horses - 4 in all. I can't see us ever parting with them. I'm sure they will remain here until the end of their natural lives.
And what small farm would be complete without poultry?? Here are the last 2 pics. The first is my pet ducks and geese, glad to be out of the barn now that spring has finally come. The gander is on the right hand side with grey patches on his wings. If you look in the background you can see some sheep at the bale feeder!
The last shot is some of my crazy feathers chickens. Yes, it's 2 photos stuck together so the birds in the middle are sliced. I miss my livestock - it's been 5 years now since they are all gone - how I miss them!

Hi Ellen! Things just reached a point where I couldn't keep up with all the work, especially at lambing and shearing time. My DH works full time and raises cattle so he couldn't do the work either so we sold everything but the llama. Since all the small livestock was mine it all went. Maybe when the children are gone I will get some farm 'pets' again.
As for spinning, I never learned. I haven't the patience to work the fibre as it is a lengthy process. I prefer to enjoy the fruits of others labor and sit peacefully and knit. It never seems like work to knit, somehow, it's so relaxing. Working fibre and spinning is not relaxing in my book! :o)
