Very First Crocheted Sweater

My youngest daughter crocheted her very first sweater using soft superwash wool. She couldn't find a pattern she really liked so instead she selected a pattern stitch and I had her make a tension swatch. We did the usual - stitches per inch, measure, figure out decreases etc. I'd say she did pretty darn good for a 12 year old! [brag! brag!]

I love the colors your daughter used for this sweater as it's very pretty and she did a gorgeous job on it too.I wish I could make a sweater, but haven't found a Beginner's pattern.Hope to hear from you.

This simple method just requires measuring and multiplying. First she made a tension swatch in her selected stitch pattern - in this case, 2 rows of white: 3 single crochet, 3 double crochet
2 rows pink: 3 double crochet, 3 single crochet
2 rows grey: 3 single crochet, 3 double crochet
Then we measured the stitches per inch and multiplied it by her measurements; hip, waist, bust, back length, sleeve length and diameter, both at the shoulder and the wrist. Because of the hour glass shape we decided to lengthen the pattern (starting the sweater at the bottom) to 4 single crochet, 4 double crochet. Then she did 2 decrease rows, a complete 3 color change apart. Then she switched to a 3x3 pattern. The nice thing about crochet is she could try it on (and did!) many times. It helped her decide where to put the decreases and when the body and sleeves were long enough. It was a pretty amazing process to watch - and participate in! She's working on a cardigan now and loosely following a pattern from a book. I'll post pics as she progresses! Thanks for your positive comments! My pleasure to pass along info!
